This week we featured an interview with Diplo, a Philidelphia-based DJ and producer who is also involved in running the record labels Mad Decent, Money Studies and Hollertronix. His production is characterised by Baltimore, Miami bass, crunk and Rio baile funk sounds, and his mixes often have elements of 80’s electro. The exception to his club orientated music is his album Florida, released on Big Dada in 2004, which is sample-based instrumental hip hop.
I caught up with him in his hotel room, where we were joined by Pase Rock from Spank Rock, where we talked of the death of Disco D, Florida, baile funk and his new movie, Favela on Blast – a documentary about the Favelas of Rio and their music.
