I play a bit of electronica tinged hip hop and speak a bit of Japanese so it was pretty appropriate to get to support my hero, DJ Krush! At my wedding in February, we walked down the aisle to Dj Krush’s “Final Home” (the piano mix) too so it made it pretty poetic, sorta, too.

Poor Krush was a bit stunned because his support rocked up, was a girl, spoke Japanese and told him enthusiastically about getting hitched to one of his songs, (in Japanese). He was bewildered but stoked. When one of the turntables buggered out, he was cool enough to let me use one of his for the remainder of the set too. After my set, he said my tunes were great, high-fived me and clapped me in front of the crowd. I still feel a little glowy…

He then pulled out an awesome set and was such a generous performer and truly the master. Thanks to Landspeed for making a dream come true. Now I just need to support Shadow and Tipper and my list is done!

“We arrived to find the lush sounds of ex-Canberran Bec Paton doing a warm-up set that, had it been louder, and she not a support DJ, would have been more than enough entertainment for one night. Her sublime mixing of records that would pose problems to the most talented of selectors formed a beat-laden, diverse, bass-y and beautiful introduction to the night – which was only slowed by quickly rectified turntable problems – and seemed like a tribute to all Krush is about: gorgeous sounds juxtaposed by drums-of-death.”

This week, apart from a helluva lot of cool tunes, we did on of those conceptual versus games again. This time we took two artists exploring the headspace of a suicide bomber and smacked them up against each other to feel out the different approaches. Braintax, outta the UK was first up with his track The Grip: A day in the life of a suicide bomber. Next up was Sydney’s own Fall for Days with Bomber, which takes on the quiet before the storm, as a suicide bomber begins their mission.

For the ravers and free spirits amongst us, there was the lowdown on the Channel 23 warehouse party. Excessive force was used to remedy the civil disobedience and perhaps people might wonder why, given that the party was civil, ( but cheeky), and peaceful.

<itunes:summary>An interview with Diplo, a Philidelphia-based DJ and producer who is also involved in running the record labels Mad Decent, Money Studies and Hollertronix. His production is characterised by Baltimore, Miami bass, crunk and Rio baile funk sounds, and his mixes often have elements of 80's electro. The exception to his club orientated music is his album Florida, released on Big Dada in 2004, which is sample-based instrumental hip hop.

I caught up with him in his hotel room, where we were joined by Pase Rock from Spank Rock, where we talked of the death of Disco D, Florida, baile funk and his new movie, Favela on Blast - a documentary about the Favelas of Rio and their music.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Tune in for an interview with Low Life Recordings' owner, Braintax. He's just dropped Panorama, which is thought provoking, culturally eclectic and eloquent. When asked what he'd bust on a massive mega-phone that could be heard worldwide, he simply said that he'd urge people to bother, question and afford themselves the joy of being passionate. A truthsayer and soothsayer.</itunes:summary>

A swarm of eclectic and brilliant international music talent has descended on Australia this month for the This Is Not Art festival and Red Bull Music Academy. Some of these artists were featured on the show to share some of the wealth and give an insight into the richness of these events.

For something a little different but interesting to muse over, an American MC, Raydar Ellis, and Australian MC, Urthboy, were played smack bang next to each other to contrast how they took on the same subject. Both wrote a track about struggling to get by as a musician working outside the mainstream music industry and it’s interesting to see the differences in the approaches but also evidence how the two scenes vary between the countries from the lyrics.
