This week we featured an interview with Diplo, a Philidelphia-based DJ and producer who is also involved in running the record labels Mad Decent, Money Studies and Hollertronix. His production is characterised by Baltimore, Miami bass, crunk and Rio baile funk sounds, and his mixes often have elements of 80’s electro. The exception to his club orientated music is his album Florida, released on Big Dada in 2004, which is sample-based instrumental hip hop.

I caught up with him in his hotel room, where we were joined by Pase Rock from Spank Rock, where we talked of the death of Disco D, Florida, baile funk and his new movie, Favela on Blast - a documentary about the Favelas of Rio and their music.

  1. Hollertronix: Missy Vs. Clash
  2. Mr Lif: Get Wise ‘91 feat. Edan
  3. Pizzicato Five: Pizzicato Five
  4. Yohimbe Brothers: Smoke and Dust (dub version)
  5. Diplo Interview
  6. Spank Rock: Put that Pussy on Me (Diplo Tonite Rmx)
  7. Daedelus: Sundown (Diplo Rmx)
  8. Adventure Time: Whetting Whistles (DJ Nobody Rmx feat. Pigeon John)
  9. Bec Paton: Party Mix (various tracks)
  10. Telementary Orchestra: Under the Cherry Tree
  11. Ellen Alien: Open
  12. Modeselektor: Tekkno Prostitutionsmaschine
  13. Keyo: On the Sofa
  14. Mr Magic: Coast to Coast (Edan edit)

Hey from Sydney! I’m Bec Paton, a small, fierce girl, who is known to spin records from time to time. Rather than wasting resources by burning a bunch of cds, and rather than you wasting time ripping them because you prefer to listen on your puty or mp3 player, this site cuts that crap and you can get my mixes easily, (that is if these sounds are your sorta thing!)

So, enjoy! Here you will find an innovative mix of interesting sounds from electronica through to hip hop and indie. On my show, Patent Pending, I often do a short mix of 20-30minutes around a theme or as a soundtrack. Past mixes include ‘Soundtrack for Bagging it up in a Moon Buggy,’ ‘Rain Streams,’ ‘Move Me Movies,’ ‘Gosh, you Look Good in Velvet!’ and ‘Sizzling Shibuya.’ Other mixes on the site are from sets I’ve played and there’s also interviews with artists that I’ve done for radio.

These can be downloaded/streamed in isolation. It will be cool to see how this little collection evolves over time! Feel free to send in a mix challenge! (You never know, I might make something that absolutely delights you!) Feel free to share with other people who you think might dig this too. Also, feedback would be greatly appreciated, so I don’t exist in a vacuum!

Big ups to Nick for making the back end of this lil’ underground world - ’tis just what I wanted!
